TESTIMONIALS
... I found it very interesting, well documented and I learned a lot! Enrique describes very well the differences among human cultures, religions, beliefs and behaviors showing that there is no one "right" way, but many, according to the view point of each individual. Here in the UN we are constantly exposed to these differences of cultures and it is a real chance to open one's mind to consider them.

I am also very sensitive to what he describes of his own life, his childhood and the feeling of "not belonging". It echoes in my own life. I was born in Algeria when it was a French territory and after the independence I came to live in France (I was 4) growing up in a place where people lived for generations and sometimes I had the same feelings as described in the book. I very much like the quotations, they were always pertinent. I will use them.

Discriminate or DIVERSIFY

What is Diversity? Why should I care?

Tensions in the workplace are higher than ever as we all recover from the toughest economic year most can remember. Unengaged U.S. workers admit to squandering 2.09 work hours per day (price tag for lost productivity: $544 billion annually). Sixty-six percent of employees are unhappy with their jobs and plan to leave this year and in 2009, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission saw 93,277 discrimination complaints.

Every day there are news stories of corporations large and small losing market share, facing discrimination suits or dealing with internal distracting gripes which collectively illustrate a detrimental impact on profitability, team synergy and innovation draining precious company resources.

Intellectual Capital ROI Stagnate?, Revenues Too Flat?, Experiencing High Turnover?, Tensions in the air?

Diversity and Inclusion, done right:
• Increases employee engagement and retention,
• Encourages creativity,
• Inspires and drives innovation from everyone in your organization,
• Enhances productivity and
• Builds solid relationships.

But we cannot fully understand the present and effectively mold the future without understanding our past and ourselves.

"Beliefs, attitudes and thoughts enter our minds without our permission. They become part of our mental programming and influence our lives without our even being aware of it."
Richard Brodie, original author of Microsoft Word.

OR

Organizations enact anti-discriminatory training to meet compliance laws, enhance harmony and foster better teamwork. They create Diversity Councils and tout Diversity and Inclusion quests to address corporate maladies. But to fully utilize the power of Diversity in our organizations, we must make it personal.

"No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care!"
Theodore Roosevelt

This is what is missing in most Diversity and Inclusion efforts. Superficial mixers, black and white policy documents and "check-the-box" activities to drive diversity efforts don't work if our leaders' hearts aren't in it. After all, would you open up to someone if you sense their motives are superficial or that they don't care about you?

To make Diversity work for you, you must work for it - to understand why we discriminate, what your own prejudices are and how to foster communication and sincere diversity efforts within your organization. What riches might your organization be missing out on because of simple ignorance about how we are all different... and how we are all alike? Do you understand the language of the genders, generations and minorities? How can you effectively create a bridge of trust?
